Dogs in North Shore City

Submitted 22 March 2007

Dog ownership in North Shore City

North Shore City provides a wide variety of information about responsible dog ownership in North Shore City. This is available on the North Shore City web site. To visit the North Shore City web site, please click here.

Regular exercise is importand for the health and wellbeing of both you and your pooch. And running with your dog is much more fun when free of a leash.

Under the Dog Control Act 1996, North Shore City’s bylaw states that dogs are not allowed on playing fields, in children’s playgrounds, or wildlife parks at any time, or on beaches and foreshores during summer (Labour weekend to Easter) between 9am - 7pm. Dogs can be exercised off their leash in all other council parks and reserves provided they do not create a nuisance. In all other public places dogs must be kept on a leash.

This differs from Auckland City where there are a limited number of designated dog exercise areas.

You must however always keep your dog in site, be respectful of other people and critters, and clean up after your dog.

Where to exercise your dog

All Council reserves can be used to exercise your dog, however dogs are not allowed:

  • within 10 metres of playground or fitness apparatus
  • within 10 metres of marked sports fields
  • within 10 metres of people on the park, beach or reserve
  • on a jetty or ramp

Outside these areas, all dogs must be under control but depending on the place, not necessarily on a lead, e.g. the owner being near the dog and using voice or body language to control the dog.

Those who do not restrain their dogs when required can be subject to an instant $200 fine or for serious offences, such as dog attacks, may face prosecution and a fine of up to $5,000 or three months’ in jail.
